In the hierarchy of self-adhesive label materials, Coated Gloss Paper (specifically Cast Coated Paper) sits at the very top of the pyramid. It is the material of choice for luxury brands—Champagne houses, French perfumeries, and high-end nutraceuticals.
But for a label converter, working with this material requires a deeper understanding than just "it looks shiny."
Why does Cast Coated paper reflect light like a mirror? How does it interact with UV inks versus solvent inks? What is the impact of surface smoothness (PPS) on dot gain?

To understand the performance, we must look at the physics of the surface.
Standard Gloss Art Paper (Machine Coated): The paper is coated with clay/latex and then passed through Supercalenders (heavy steel rollers) under high pressure. This irons the paper flat, creating a gloss level of roughly 65-75%.
Cast Coated Paper (Mirror Kote): This process is different. The wet coating is cast against a highly polished, hot Chromium Drum. The paper dries while in contact with this mirror surface.
Result: The paper replicates the texture of the drum perfectly.
Gloss Level: Reaches 85-90%+. It is not just shiny; it is reflective.
In technical terms, we measure smoothness using the Parker Print Surf (PPS) method.
Standard Art Paper: PPS ~ 1.0 - 1.5 microns.
Xinzhu Cast Coated: PPS ~ 0.6 - 0.8 microns.
Why it matters: A lower PPS number means a smoother surface. This allows for incredibly fine halftone dots (up to 200 lpi), essential for printing photorealistic images on labels.
The biggest challenge with high-gloss papers is managing the ink. Because the surface is so closed and smooth, ink behaves differently than on porous uncoated paper.
A common myth is that Cast Coated paper doesn't absorb ink.
The Reality: Xinzhu’s Cast Coated Paper features a micro-porous coating. It allows the solvent/water component of the ink to penetrate quickly ("setting" the ink), while keeping the pigment on the surface.
Optimization: This balance prevents "Ink Spread" (Dot Gain), ensuring that a 5-point font remains crisp.

Symptom: Wet ink from the front of the label transfers to the back of the liner when wound onto a roll.
Solution: Use "Anti-Set-Off" powder in offset printing, or increase UV lamp intensity in Flexo. More importantly, check the Absorbency of the paper stock. Xinzhu controls the coating porosity to ensure faster setting times.
Symptom: The mirror finish has hairline scratches after passing through the press.
Solution: Cast Coated paper is delicate. Ensure your press rollers are clean. We recommend applying a Clear Varnish or Over-Laminate as a final station to protect that pristine mirror look during shipping.
Symptom: The label pops off the edge of a small bottle.
Solution: Cast Coated paper is thicker and stiffer (usually 80gsm+). It has "memory." For small diameter bottles (<20mm), you must use a High-Tack Adhesive (which Xinzhu supplies) or switch to a thinner 70gsm grade.
When sourcing Jumbo Rolls of Coated Gloss Paper from China, do not just ask for "Glossy Paper." Specify these parameters to ensure quality:
Gloss (75°): Should be >85% for Cast Coated.
Whiteness (CIE): A higher CIE (e.g., >110) means a brighter, cooler white, which makes colors pop. Lower CIE looks creamy/yellow.
Opacity: Essential if applying labels over dark glass bottles. Xinzhu offers high-opacity grades.
Adhesive Coat Weight: For textured wine bottles, ask for a higher coat weight (e.g., 22gsm instead of 18gsm).
